I am sure most of us working with Omniture SiteCatalyst avoid using the Data Warehouse for data extraction though we have access to it. This might be because of the complexity involved in that or may be its Time consuming, since the results are not provided in real-time. This could be the mistake that we are committing.

Omniture Data Warehouse

Most of us assume the Omniture Data warehouse to just be the backup of our data, but it’s beyond that. It acts as a storehouse of our data and can also provides the data at deeper segmentation, that which we would not get through a normal Site Catalyst.

To know the importance of Data Warehouse one has to understand how it differs from the Site Catalyst.

  • In Site Catalyst, the reports are pre-defined therefore they can return quickly in the browser and its suitable for simple queries with minimum number of report breakdowns on the other hand, in Data warehouse raw data is stored and used for generating the responses for complex queries for which the results are not available in real-time
  • Data Warehouse allows deeper level segmentation (Unlimited number of breakdowns) EG: The data of the Visitors who landed on a particular Marketing landing pages, came from a specific city using a specific browser could be retrieved, where in the Site Catalyst doesn’t provide for multilevel Segmentations

Advantages of Omniture Data warehouse:

  • Suitable for Complex queries for which the data segmentation is beyond two levels
  • Data Warehouse segments have an “exclude” function that allows us to eliminate data that we don’t require to be included in our segment query
  • We can get the required data for a given metric in Data Warehouse, which is not possible in a Site Catalyst

Disadvantages of Omniture Data Warehouse:

  • Time consuming, since the out put depends on the complexity of the query. The more complex the Data Warehouse segment and the larger the time frame, the longer it can take for a report to be returned.
  • Not suitable for Reporting in a shot time span, since we don’t receive the data in real- time

One of our Clients owning Gaming Site were in need of the Visits data for prop ids for given time span, but only the page views data are available in our regular reporting tool (Site Catalyst)

But, by using Omniture Data Warehouse we were able to extract the required data for Prop id’s with both Visits and also its Views.

Steps followed by us to extract the required data from Omniture Data Warehouse

Step 1: Selected the required Omniture Suite> Advanced Analysis > Custom Data Warehouse report

Step2: Defined the required Report & Metrics

Finally Schedule the Delivery as and when required

Schedule the time and the frequency to receive the report

NOTE: The response depends on the complexity of the query/requirement

If you need to know more about any of the web analytics tools and tricks, please leave your email id in a comment. And we will do our best to reply to your queries.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.
